Prescott Mountain Bike Rider Dies Following Collapse

On April 1, 2018, at approximately 1:30 PM, 71-year-old David Mangan from Prescott collapsed and ultimately died during a mountain bike ride on the West Side Story Trail located off a forest road south of Iron Springs Road and East of Highland Pines, Prescott, Arizona. David had been riding with several riders from a local cyclist group when the incident occurred.

As deputies arrived, fire personnel from the Prescott Fire Department were administering CPR. Prior to their arrival, an off-duty nurse riding with the group had already started CPR. Unfortunately, David succumbed to the medical condition and died.

One of the cyclist group members told deputies David met the group about 1 pm and he appeared ok.  The group left the trail head about 1:10 PM and took a break around 1:30 PM. About 5 minutes later David collapsed. Fire officials indicate it took about 35 minutes to access the scene due to the remote area and lack of a definitive location. Dispatchers used GPS coordinates from the reporting party’s cell phone to eventually pinpoint the site.

A prior medical conditional may have contributed to David’s collapse.
