Sierra Vista Police Arrest Serial Burglar

Sierra Vista Police Department personnel arrested a local man on Monday for multiple counts of vehicle burglary after a citizen reported seeing suspicious activity in a parking lot.

SVPD officers responded to the parking lot of Applebee’s, located at 3899 El Mercado Loop, when a citizen sitting inside a vehicle called in reporting that a black man, who was about 6 feet 1 inches tall and was wearing a dark black hooded sweat shirt, was checking door handles on several vehicles and, at one point, crawled underneath a vehicle to avoid observation by passing motorists. With the assistance of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, SVPD officers soon made contact with 23-year-old Danny Thomas in a nearby area.

After an initial investigation was conducted, Thomas was arrested at about 8:51 p.m. on Monday, April 16, for several counts of attempted vehicle burglary that occurred that night. He was then transported to the Sierra Vista Police Department for further investigation into past vehicle burglaries. Since Feb. 7, 2018, the department had taken five prior vehicle burglary cases from the same parking lot and that of Vinny’s New York Pizza, located at 1977 Frontage Road.

Thomas was booked into Cochise County Jail on five counts of vehicle burglary and nine counts of attempted vehicle burglary, which are all felony offenses. He remains in custody on a $10,000 bond.

“We would like to thank the citizen who promptly reported seeing suspicious activity and enabled our department to get a serial burglar off the streets,” stated SVPD Public Information Officer Cpl. Tim Wachtel.
