Monday, May 14, 2018, through Thursday, May 17, 2018, PACE Electrical Construction Inc., under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) will upgrade the traffic signals at four intersections on Speedway Boulevard:
- Monday, May 14, 2018 – Stone Avenue
- Tuesday, May 15, 2018 – Main Avenue
- Wednesday, May 16, 2018 – Euclid Avenue
- Thursday, May 17, 2018 – Alvernon Way
Crews will work from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The traffic signals will be out of service while the contractor installs and makes electrical connections to the new traffic signal heads. Tucson Police will provide point control to guide travelers through the intersections.
The upgrades will consist of converting the existing left turn signals to new protected-permitted arrow indications. The new protected-permitted arrow indications will allow left turns across oncoming traffic when they display a flashing yellow arrow, and provide protected left turns when a solid green arrow is displayed. The intersections will operate much as they do now with the addition of a new pedestrian safety feature: left turn arrows will remain red while the crosswalk displays a “Walk” or flashing “Don’t Walk.” A red arrow will protect pedestrians from left turning vehicles if the vehicle would cross their path.
This will improve safety by reducing conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians and by alerting drivers to the presence of a pedestrian to their left without delaying turning traffic when no pedestrian is present. Please use caution when traveling through this area and watch for work crews and personnel providing traffic control.
