Sierra Vista Police Close State Route 90 For Suicidal Subject

The Sierra Vista Police Department and Cochise County Sheriff’s Office closed State Route 90 on either side of the San Pedro River bridge for about one hour on Tuesday afternoon while resolving an incident involving a suicidal subject.

Sierra Vista Police Department (SVPD) officers responded to a report of a suicidal man in the Sierra Vista area at about 12:32 p.m. Information provided to the officers included a suicide note and text messages from the subject, who said he was under a bridge with a handgun and was intent on committing suicide.

In the course of the investigation, a negotiator from the SVPD Crisis Negotiation Team made contact with the subject by phone. Once the subject was located, SVPD officers and deputies with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office stopped traffic on State Route 90 on either side of the San Pedro River to ensure safety of those involved and the public.

The negotiator continued to speak with the subject for about an hour. The subject ultimately made the decision to leave the scene without further incident.
