Mesa Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested

On January 9, 2017 the Mesa Police Department investigated a sexual assault of a four-year-old child that occurred in the area of 500 E Broadway in Mesa. In April, 2017 a bulletin was released indicating DNA evidence had been collected from the scene.

After exhausting all investigative leads, Mesa Police sought the services of Parabon NanoLabs (Parabon), a DNA technology company that specializes in DNA phenotyping: the process of predicting physical appearance and ancestry from unidentified DNA evidence. Despite having a snapshot composite (scientific approximation of appearance), the case remained unsolved and all investigative leads were exhausted.

On March 14, 2018 the defendant was arrested by DPS for a DUI investigation. Once in custody, his DNA was obtained and was found to be a match with the DNA obtained in this case. The defendant was interviewed and acknowledged going into a house that was not his that night and was confirmed to have been living approximately half a block from the victim’s house at the time of the incident. A court order for DNA was obtained and the results confirmed the defendant’s DNA match.

The defendant has been identified as 31-year-old Oscar Roberto Nunez Gonzalez. Gonzalez has been charged with one count of Sex Conduct with a Minor, one count of Public Sexual Indecency, and one count of Burglary in the Second Degree. Gonzalez has been in custody since the March 14, 2018 arrest and was turned over to Mesa Police custody.
