A 21-year-old Rio Rico woman driving a Chevy Cruz with two minor children and an undocumented Mexican woman inside the vehicle, fled the Interstate 19 Immigration Checkpoint Wednesday night after being instructed to park her vehicle in a secondary inspection area.

A Nogales Station Border Patrol agent became suspicious when the woman’s adult female passenger failed to respond to his immigration questions therefore the agent instructed the driver to park in a secondary inspection area for further questioning. Instead of following the agent’s instructions, the driver sped away.

During the subsequent pursuit, the fleeing driver ran a red light at the Continental Road intersection and caused an accident before being arrested by Border Patrol agents.

Agents charged the Rio Rico woman for human smuggling and fleeing an immigration checkpoint. The adult passenger, identified as a 19-year-old Mexican national, was processed for immigration violations. The two minor children, both U.S. citizens, were turned over to Arizona Department of Child Protective Services.
