DPS Trooper Killed, 2 Wounded On I-10 Near Avondale

On Wednesday, at approximately 10:00 p.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was killed and two others were injured in a struggle and shooting on I-10. The incident occurred in the West Valley area near Avondale.

Arizona Department of Public Safety director, Colonel Frank Milstead, held a press conference early Thursday morning. Milstead said around 10 p.m. Wednesday dispatchers received several calls of a vehicle behaving erratically on Interstate 10 eastbound near Avondale Boulevard.

Authorities received calls that objects were being thrown from a vehicle at other cars. Citizens were able to get the suspect out of the road., but when DPS troopers arrived at the scene, they struggled with the suspect.

The suspect reportedly got control of one trooper’s gun and fired at least two shots. One shots hit a trooper in the shoulder, wounding him. The other shot hit a second trooper, and killed him. A third trooper was hurt during a fight with the suspect.
