Sahuarita Police officers rescue bank customers from robber

SAHUARITA — Sahuarita Police officers rescued Wells Fargo Bank customers who were being held on Saturday by a 35-year-old robber who appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

At about 2 p.m. Saturday, officers were sent to the Wells Fargo Bank, 18590 S. Nogales Highway, regarding a report of a disturbance.

A male inside the bank was demanding money and not allowing others to leave the bank, said a release from the Sahuarita Police Department.

Officers arrived and made contact with the suspect, who assaulted the officers and fought with them before he was arrested, the police release said. Two officers sustained minor injuries.

Keven Smith, of Green Valley, was booked into the Pima County Jail on 15 preliminary criminal counts:  nine counts of kidnapping; two counts of  aggravated assault on police officers; one count of attempted robbery; one count of  possession of a dangerous drug; one count of third degree burglary and one count of  resisting arrest.
