Man dies after car swept away in Tonto Creek

A 69-year-old man, Robert George Pettite, has died after the car he was driving was swept away by rushing water in Tonto Creek.

According to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, on December 7 at approximately 12:56 p.m., the Office received a 911 call regarding a vehicle stuck in the second crossing on the Tonto creek near Gisela, Arizona. Deputies responded and began to search the area with local residents.

Approximately 2200 yards from the vehicle the body of the driver, Mr. Petitte, was located on an island in the creek.
