Armed Robbery Will Land Man Back In Prison Less Than One Year After Release

HOMELESS MAN BEATEN, ROBBED IN SIERRA VISTA PARK

Brian Matthew Russell Quint

Less than one year after completing a four-year prison stint, a Sierra Vista man has accepted a plea deal sending him back to prison for at least seven years for displaying a gun while he robbed a homeless man in a city park.

Brian Matthew Russell Quint pleaded guilty Feb. 24 to three felonies stemming from a mid-November incident in which the homeless man was hospitalized after being beaten in a restroom at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Quint admitted pointing a handgun at the man during the attack witnessed by a woman who knew both men.

Quint, 30, will be sentenced March 23 by Presiding Judge James Conlogue of the Cochise County Superior Court. The judge has discretion to impose a term for the armed robbery charge of not less than 7 years and not more than 13 years in prison.

Conlogue will also sentence Quint for possession of the narcotic drug Oxycodone and for felony weapons misconduct stemming from his possession of an assault rifle. Those charges carry a possible term of 2.25 to 7.5 years each although the sentences will be served at the same time as the armed robbery charge.

Court records show Quint returned to the Sierra Vista area in mid-2019 after being released from the Arizona Department of Corrections where he had served time for prohibited possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a narcotic drug. He also has a prior felony conviction for a 2009 disorderly conduct incident, which prohibits Quint from possessing or controlling any firearm or deadly weapon.

On Nov. 18, Sierra Vista Detective Joshua Nicola was assigned the assault report. He interviewed an eyewitness who confirmed the homeless man’s accounting of the beating and identified Quint as the perpetrator. The eyewitness also confirmed Quint pointed a gun during the attack.

Nicola placed Quint under arrest Nov. 20 and one week later a county grand jury indicted Quint on 19 felonies, including armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a dangerous drug, and 10 counts of weapons misconduct.

Among the weapons found in Quint’s possession were two 12-guage shotguns, six handguns, several swords, and a crossbow with scope.

Conlogue has ordered Quint held without bond in the Cochise County jail until sentencing. Part of the sentencing order may include restitution of up to $10,000.
