Maricopa County Detention Officer In Serious Condition After Inmate Attack

PHOENIX – On Wednesday morning, a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was assaulted by an inmate, Johann Benson, at the Arizona State Prison Complex Alhambra facility in Phoenix.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Officers transported Benson from the Lower Buckeye Jail to the Alhambra facility. During the exchange process, Benson assaulted the officer by striking him in the face. While defending himself, the officer fell to the ground hitting his head.

The officer suffered a serious head injury and remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Benson remains in custody pending investigation results.

Benson was originally in custody for one count of armed robbery, assault and a probation violation.
