APACHE JUNCTION – A man is dead following an Apache Junction Police officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning. Officers responded to a call about campers illegally camping in the gym parking lot at 3003 W. Apache Trail.
According to the Apache Junction Police Department, officers contacted a man wearing a holstered handgun. They identified themselves and repeatedly told him not to touch the weapon.
Police say that the man failed to follow verbal commands and then suddenly pulled the handgun.
Officers discharged their weapons, striking the still unidentified man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers were not hurt and have been placed on administrative leave while the Arizona Department of Public Safety investigates the shooting.
