Pima County Supervisor Candidate’s Stunt Stinks

Pima County Board of Supervisors candidate Juan Padres promoting his "kindness" on Facebook.

TUCSON – A candidate for the Pima County Board of Supervisors District 3 seat, Juan Pancho Padres, is trying to capitalize on the panic surrounding the horrific COVID-19 crisis. Padres’ campaign stunt is described as shitty by critics and brilliant by fans.

Rather than privately reaching out to friends and neighbors, who like most of us know many residents someone in need, Padres announced his “generosity’ in a Facebook post:

Hello Tucson friends,

Tomorrow morning (Sunday)at 10:00 AM at Jacobs Park, 3300 N Fairview Ave, I will be donating Toilet Paper Rolls to anyone who needs it. Please share this message with anybody you think is in dire need of some TP ?

The toilet paper I will be donating was all purchased in Mexico where there is no shortage. In fact, I don’t think the brand is even available here in the U.S.

In this time of uncertainty and need, we must step up and help our neighbor. Maybe we can have kindness go viral instead.

His political stunt is reminiscent of tactics employed by international drug cartels and organizations like Hamas, who ingratiate themselves to members of a community by providing goods, services, and security in return for access and use of their land.

Republican candidate for Supervisor District 3 Gabby Saucedo-Mercer questioned Padres’ tactics and motives. “Padres is a great student of Rahm Emanuel,” said Saucedo-Mercer.  He will never let a good crisis go to waste.” She noted that “toilet paper from Mexico is not biodegradable and is typically thrown in the trash and not to be flushed.”

Whether this “free” toilet paper is biodegradable or not is yet to be seen.  The real issue, say critics, is the fact that Padres is capitalizing on fear to gain political favor in an election season when the public needs security at all levels not just their hind end.

Sometimes good ideas end up in the toilet and unfortunately this one needs to be flushed, say critics.
