Struggling businesses brace for Arizona property tax deadline

Phoenix – This week, after considerable pressure from Arizona legislators, House and Senate leaders announced plans to convene on May 1 and delay ending the 2020 Legislative Session in order to complete the people’s business. At least one politico, Rodney Glassman, Republican candidate for Maricopa County Assessor, sees it as an opportunity to ensure the people are not hit with property tax bills while the economy is at a stand still.

Glassman commended the State Legislature for not calling an early end to the Legislative Year and reiterated his call for the Arizona State Legislature to extend the deadline for property owners to pay the second half of 2019 property taxes to June 1st. Taxes on all commercial and residential properties are currently due and are considered past due on May 1st.

“This is action the Legislature could move swiftly on that would provide meaningful relief to the working families of Maricopa County and every county in the state,” said Glassman.

Glassman said he was urging lawmakers to “move on this quickly and in sufficient numbers for it to be effective immediately. With President Trump’s COVID aid package and Governor Ducey suspending evictions for 90 days, it’s only fair to extend a thoughtful reprieve to homeowners, landlords, and those working to build our community during this time of economic crisis.”

Glassman says he has made taxpayer advocacy a central part of his campaign for Assessor. Earlier this year, Glassman joined Maricopa County Treasurer Royce Flora and Treasurers from across Arizona in calling upon the Arizona State Legislature to extend the tax deadline.
