PHOENIX – More than 2 miles of southbound Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway just south on Interstate 10 will be closed this weekend to allow Arizona Department of Transportation crews to place rubberized asphalt.

The southbound lanes will be closed between I-10 and Lower Buckeye Road from 10 p.m. Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. Monday, May 11. All ramps connecting I-10 with the southbound South Mountain Freeway, including the westbound HOV ramp, also will be closed, as will the southbound on-ramps at Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road.

Drivers on I-10 can connect with southbound South Mountain Freeway by exiting I-10 at 51st or 67th avenues, driving south to Lower Buckeye Road and then connecting with the South Mountain Freeway.

Drivers from the West Valley may want to consider following I-10 through central Phoenix to avoid delays. There are no restrictions on the westbound/northbound South Mountain Freeway. Eastbound drivers traveling beyond the Phoenix area may want to consider following State Route 85 south to Interstate 8, then driving east to reconnect with I-10 in Casa Grande.

The South Mountain Freeway opened in December. The 22-mile route provides an alternate route that may allow drivers traveling from one side of the Phoenix area to the other to avoid potential congestion in downtown Phoenix.
