Previously Deported Convicted Sex Offender Arrested By BP Near Arivaca

TUCSON –On Monday evening, U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a previously deported sex offender, Ivan Maldonado, while patrolling the desert south of Arivaca, Arizona.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents tracked and encountered eight individuals near the international border. During field processing, agents discovered Maldonado, 27, was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a minor in San Joaquin County, California, in 2016.

Maldonado was sentenced to six years in prison for the offense and was removed from the United States on May 22, 2020.

Maldonado remains in custody, pending prosecution for reentry of a previously removed felon.

The other seven people encountered were expelled to Mexico under Title 42 authority.
