On Sunday, Sen. Martha McSally called the plan to remove President Theodore Roosevelt’s statue from the Museum of Natural History in New York City, “freakin’ stupid and scary.”

Across the country, statues are the target of the “cancel culture.” Initially statues of Confederate leaders were targets, but last week a mob set fire to a statue of George Washington in Portland, Ore., before pulling it to the ground.

While a slight majority of Americans favor removing statues of Confederate figures, there is scant evidence of widespread support for the destruction of other historical figures.

The Roosevelt statue has stood at the museum’s Central Park West entrance since 1940. The statue depicts Roosevelt on horseback with a Native American man and an African man standing next to the horse.

“The American Museum of Natural History has asked to remove the Theodore Roosevelt statue because it explicitly depicts Black and Indigenous people as subjugated and racially inferior,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio in a written statement. “The City supports the Museum’s request. It is the right decision and the right time to remove this problematic statue.”

According to White House archives, Roosevelt “won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War, reached a Gentleman’s Agreement on immigration with Japan, and sent the Great White Fleet on a goodwill tour of the world.”

Roosevelt is best known for supporting unions, and attacking big business.
