PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) will provide the financial assistance to cleanup an asbestos-contaminated site in the Town of Kearny, after the Town’s application for a Brownfields Program grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was denied.

Representative David Cook, who advocated for the funding of the project, commended the agency for “stepping up.”

“When the EPA turned down the Town’s grant request, ADEQ stepped forward to help,” said Cook. “Agency staff contacted me last week with positive news that they had identified funds available within its Brownfields Assistance Program to pay for the Kearny asbestos abatement project.”

Brownfields Program funds are designed to assist communities in identifying and mitigating environmental hazards and restoring blighted properties to productive use.

“The team at ADEQ did amazing work for the Town of Kearny, making it possible for the contaminated site to get cleaned up and safely repurposed,” Cook added. “I’m grateful for their help and believe this is a great example of our government working on behalf of citizens to solve problems.”
