Cottonwood – A Glendale man, Rian Lloyd Wilson, is in custody after launching an unprovoked attack on a utility worker.

According to Cottonwood Police, on morning of March 3, officers responded to the area of Cactus Street and North Main Street for a report of an assault in progress. It was reported that an unknown man was actively striking another man in the head with a rock.

The 44-year old Wilson was immediately arrested when officers arrived.

Police have determined that the victim, a 49-year old Flagstaff resident, parked in a parking lot in his fully marked utility work truck to work on paperwork. This is when Wilson, who was unknown to and unprovoked by the victim, walked up to the victim’s driver door and began banging on the closed window.

When the victim attempted to open the door to speak to the suspect, Wilson broke the driver door window and immediately began assaulting the victim with a rock to his head.

The assault continued until the victim was able to gain some control of Wilson and yelled for help. This is when several concerned bystanders came to help and one person restrained Wilson to wait for law enforcement. The victim sustained serious head injuries due to the rock that was used as the weapon during the assault.

This victim was transported by ambulance to the Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood for treatment of his injuries.

Police say they do not know what motivated Wilson to commit this assault.

Wilson was booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center on multiple counts of Aggravated Assault (Felony) and Criminal Damage (Misdemeanor).
