Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board members violated their own mask mandates as they voted to affirm their commitment to ignore recently passed legislation that prohibits mask mandates.

During the Board’s Thursday evening, members mostly shed their masks as they took turns discussing the District’s business. That discussion involved the District’s decision to continue following the Center for Disease Control’s controversial recommendation that all K-12 students wear masks during school.

The meeting of the maskless members concluded with a unanimous vote to ignore a newly passed Arizona law that prohibits mask mandates. The members never even mentioned the prohibition in their discussion despite the fact that the District is being sued by a teacher for the violation of it.

Experts say that while the law does not go into effect until September 29, the District is violating the spirit of the law by ignoring the intent of the Legislature, which was to give families the choice to have their children wear masks or not.
