Pima County Supervisors Reject Mask Mandate, Vaccine Requirement For Employees

On Tuesday, a majority of the members of the Pima County Board of Supervisors rejected a request to require that all employees receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The majority also rejected a request to mandate masks for all K-12 schools in the County.

Both requests were made by Supervisor Matt Heinz.

County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry had recommended to the Board the draconian vaccine mandate as a condition of employment.

Huckelberry is not giving up. He is seeking advice from the County’s attorneys as to whether unvaccinated employees can be forced to pay more for their insurance.

In a surprise move, Supervisor Rex Scott made a motion to kill Heinz’s vaccine passport proposal by offering a motion to not require employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Scott’s motion passed passed in a 4-1 vote.

Despite the fact that state law prohibits school districts from requiring face coverings, Heinz pushed his mask mandate agenda item. It failed in a 3-2 vote.

Heinz snapped at his fellow Board members and then left the Zoom meeting.

“I’d like to thank Supervisor Steve Christy for fighting on behalf of the Pima County employees and all citizens of this community,” said former Supervisor Ally Miller. “We also need to thank Supervisor Christy and the other 3 board members, Bronson, Scott and Grijalva for standing on the side of freedom.”
