On Wednesday, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed Rep. Raquel Terán to fill the Arizona Senate vacancy in Legislative District 30 after now former Sen. Tony Navarrete was indicted for child sex abuse.

District 30 covers west central Phoenix, from downtown all the way north to Dunlap Avenue and west to 67th Avenue.  Terán currently represents the district in the Arizona House.

Terán was elected to the Arizona House in November 2018.  Terán is the current Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party.

Board members selected Terán from a list of three candidates submitted by a citizen’s panel they appointed, in accordance with Arizona law.  The candidates had to live in the district and be a member of the same party as the person who vacated the office.  In this case, a Democrat.

A committee will now be needed to fill Terán’s House seat.

Terán will serve through 2022. The next election for seats in the Arizona Senate will be the 2022 primary.
