Man Charged With Manslaughter In Deadly Pima County Collision

Pima County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a deadly collision involving five vehicles on South Nogales Highway near East Helen Marie Drive on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at approximately 12:45 a.m.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation revealed that a Dodge flatbed truck, traveling southbound on Nogales Highway crossed the center line and sideswiped a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling northbound.  The Dodge flatbed truck then struck a northbound Ford F-150. Two other vehicles, a Honda Civic and a Ford sedan, struck debris from the collision immediately after it occurred.

The driver of the Ford F-150, 60-year-old Rafael Caballero, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge flatbed truck, 54-year-old Edward Trejo, initially left the scene and returned later.

No one else involved in this collision was injured.

Trejo was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center for Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Collision, Endangerment, Criminal Damage, and Driving Under the Influence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
