Phoenix Police Investigating Whether Shooting Was In Self-Defense

Phoenix Police detectives are reviewing evidence in the shooting death of a man by woman who said he was assaulting her.

Phoenix Police officers were called to an apartment complex in the area of Bethany Home Road and 27th Avenue about a shooting Sunday morning around 3:25 a.m. When they got there, they found a man, Abdul Cooper, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. Cooper was taken by the fire department to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Officers spoke to a woman at the scene who admitted to shooting Cooper after he assaulted her. The woman was detained and cooperated with the investigation.

Detectives responded to the area where they spoke to witnesses, processed the crime scene and reviewed evidence. The woman provided a self-defense claim to detectives. The woman was released and the case will be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
