Yavapai County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Lopez has died after he was shot by a suspect on Tuesday afternoon in a Cordes Lakes neighborhood near Statecoach Trail and Red Rock Road. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is in custody after a standoff with law enforcement officers.
According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred before 2 p.m., in the area of Stagecoach Trail and Red Rock Road.
Sgt. Lopez, age 51, died at the HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Sgt. Lopez was a member of Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years.
