Suspected Self-Defense Shooting Leaves One Man Dead In South Phoenix

Phoenix police detectives are investigating a homicide that left one-man dead after a confrontation with an acquaintance.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers were called to a private business in the area of 14th Street and Broadway Road around 7:10 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

When they got there, they found a man, later identified as Jesus Hinojosa-Chavez, on the ground with a gunshot wound. Officers also located a man who called 911 and identified himself as the shooter. The fire department responded and pronounced Mr. Hinojosa-Chavez deceased on scene.

Homicide detectives responded and learned Hinojosa-Chavez and the man were acquaintances and had a brief confrontation at a local business. The man saw Hinojosa-Chavez reach for what he believed to be a firearm and shot Hinojosa-Chavez. Witnesses on scene corroborated the story provided by the man.

The investigation remains active as detectives continue to process the crime scene and review the evidence. In consultation with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, the man was released, and charges will be submitted for review at the conclusion of the investigation.
