Chandler Police Hoping To Locate Street Racer Involved In Deadly Collision

The Chandler Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating a driver in connection with a deadly collision that occurred on August 25, 2022.

According to the Chandler Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:30 p.m., to Gilbert Road and Powell Place regarding a traffic collision. Callers reported a red Chevy Camaro lost control, rolled over, and collided with a brick wall.

Officers arrived and provided medical aid to the driver of the Chevy Camaro, identified a 32-year-old Mahad Zara. Zara was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and died from his injuries later in the evening.

Police learned that Zara, and another vehicle had been racing at speeds of 80 to 90 miles an hour on Gilbert Road from Riggs Road. Upon passing Chandler Heights Road, Zara lost control, rolled the vehicle.

Witnesses describe the other vehicle as a gray or charcoal colored Dodge type sports car that continued north after the collision and did not stop. Detectives located the video surveillance showing both vehicles traveling at extreme speeds northbound on Gilbert Road just before the crash.

Police are seeking additional witnesses in this case and perhaps video surveillance from vehicle dash mounted cameras. Information that leads to the location of the dodge type sports car or driver may be eligible for a reward of up to $1000.
