On Wednesday, a University of Arizona professor was fatally shot on campus by a student.
At approximately 5:10 p.m., Arizona Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle outside of Gila Bend. The driver of the vehicle was identified as the suspect Marad Deruish and is now in custody.
Dr. Thomas Meixner, a professor and the head of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, has been identified as the victim.
The professor was shot at approximately 2:00 p.m., at the John W. Harshbarger Building. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
