Man Arrested In Fatal Collision, Charged With Manslaughter

Phoenix police detectives responded to 43rd Avenue and McLellan Boulevard to investigate a two-vehicle collision that left one person dead and one critically injured. The driver of one vehicle was booked into jail for multiple offenses including manslaughter.

Just before 2:00 a.m. on December 11, 2022, Phoenix police responded to a call of a collision involving two vehicles near 43rd Avenue and McLellan Boulevard. Officers found an adult male suffering serious injury. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the fire department. Occupants of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital. The driver was identified as David Leeshawn Johnson. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger was identified as an adult female. She was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.

Detectives believe the vehicle driven by Johnson was going south on 43rd Avenue. The vehicle crossed over into the northbound lanes for unknown reasons and struck another vehicle head on. The vehicle going north was driven by an adult male, who suffered fatal injuries on scene. Johnson was treated at the hospital and released. Impairment is believed to be a factor. Johnson was booked into jail on multiple charges including manslaughter. The female passenger remains in the hospital.

The crash remain under investigation.
