Arizona’s freshman representatives in Congress, Rep. Eli Crane and Juan Ciscomani are making waves already by scoring seats on key committees.

Rep. Eli Crane has been appointed to the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Juan Ciscomani has been appointed to the House Appropriations Committee.

The Committee on Homeland Security was created by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002 to provide Congressional oversight over the development of the Department of Homeland Security. The Committee focuses on legislation and oversight related to the security of the United States.

The Appropriations Committee is responsible for writing legislation to provide funding for government agencies, departments, and organizations. The Appropriations Committee sets funding levels for all federal programs.

“I am honored to serve on the House Homeland Security Committee for the 118th Congress. The Committee plays a decisive role on national security issues, including border security, counterterrorism efforts, and cybersecurity,” said Crane in a press release.

“Democrats’ open border policies have created a completely avoidable national crisis. Since President Biden took office, there have been more than 4.3 million illegal crossings at the Southern Border. While troubling, it isn’t shocking,” continued Crane. “Biden stopped construction of the border wall, halted deportations, and suspended ‘Remain in Mexico.’”

“As illegal crossings increase, the amount of fentanyl flooding into our communities is also rising. Drug overdose – largely fueled by fentanyl – is now the leading cause of death for adults 18-45-years-old,” said Crane whose mostly rural district has been hard hit by the fentanyl epidemic.

“We’ve got to put a stop to illegal crossings, which enable human trafficking and deadly drugs to flow into our communities. Enough is enough – American lives depend on it. As the only representative from Arizona serving on the House Homeland Security Committee, I will fight to defend our great state and fiercely combat the disaster at our border,” vowed Crane.

“Having served our nation as a United States Navy SEAL, Congressman Crane knows the countless threats worldwide that our nation faces and that nothing is more important than ensuring an unwavering security posture,” said Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green. “Additionally, representing a district in a border state, Congressman Crane has seen the devastating impacts President Biden’s reckless border security policies have had on communities across the country. I look forward to serving alongside Congressman Crane as we work to fulfill our commitment to America.”

“The Appropriations Committee will provide a unique opportunity to work on a wide array of issues facing Arizonans,” said Ciscomani in a press release. “As a proud Representative of a border district which includes two military installations, I understand the importance of prioritizing a secure border and military readiness. Growing up in this district, I understand firsthand the broad challenges, opportunities, and issues of the district: border security, infrastructure, trade and commerce, agriculture, water, healthcare, veteran affairs, energy, and defense.”

Ciscomani believes his background as a Senior Advisor to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and as Vice-Chairman of the Arizona-Mexico Commission gives him “unique, state-level and international perspectives on the appropriations process.”

Ciscomani is “looking forward to working with the Arizona delegation and my colleagues to promote fiscal responsibility, bring transparency to federal spending, and preserve the American Dream for all.”

“The hardworking families in my district need to know that their tax dollars are being spent responsibly and efficiently,” said Ciscomani, who represents the fifth poorest metropolitan area in the nation. “That will be my objective as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.”
