Wrong-Way Driver Causes Collision In North Phoenix, 3 Dead

Phoenix police detectives are investigating a fatal vehicle collision involving three cars that occurred late last night in north Phoenix.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, at about 11:20 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2023, Phoenix police responded to a call of a collision near 20600 North 19th Avenue. When officers got to the scene, they saw one of the involved cars on fire. Phoenix Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. Once the fire was out, Fire personnel pronounced the driver deceased.

The other vehicle involved was driven by 18-year-old Abelino Diaz with 38-year-old Octaviano Giron as the passenger. Both men were taken to local hospitals where the did not survive their injuries. The third vehicle involved was driven by an adult male with an adult female as the passenger. Neither occupant of the third car suffered injuries.

During the investigation detectives learned that the car driven by Diaz was driving south in the northbound lanes of 19th Avenue when it struck the second car, driving north on 19th Avenue.
