Phoenix Police Officer Hospitalized After Being Hit By Red Light Runner

Phoenix police are investigating a collision involving a police vehicle that resulted in an officer being transported with serious injuries. The occupants of the other car involved were detained after they fled from the scene.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, early Wednesday morning just after 12:30, officers responded to a call of a serious vehicle collision involving a police patrol car at 40th Street and Oak Street. Officers were told over the radio that the police officer was trapped inside the car. The Phoenix Fire Department extricated the officer from the police car. The officer was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He remains hospitalized.

During the collision, the adult male driver and two adult male passengers of the other vehicle took off on foot from the vehicle but were eventually located and detained. The driver suffered injuries from the collision and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives responded to take over the investigation. Early information indicates the officer was going west on Oak Street through the intersection when a vehicle going north ran the red light and struck the officer’s car.

Detectives interviewed the driver and passengers in the other car. No arrests have been made at this time. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
