Phoenix Officer Hospitalized After Ambush Style Shooting, Suspect Arrested

Phoenix Police Department detectives have made an arrest in a shooting incident that hospitalized an officer in the neighborhood of 11th Avenue and Atlanta Avenue Friday morning.

Phoenix police officers responded to a hit and run accident call near 1100 West Atlanta Avenue at about 9:46 a.m. on March 24, 2023. As the first responding officer arrived, she saw an adult male walking on foot matching the description given on the call. While approaching in her patrol car, the suspect pulled a rifle and began shooting at the officer.

The officer made an emergency movement in the patrol car and drove away from the threat. During this time, the officer suffered a gunshot wound to her left hip and a bullet fragments to her face. Phoenix Fire responded and took the officer to a local hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect left the area and was later located in a nearby house. Detectives with the Special Assignment Unit responded and were able to successfully take suspect into custody. The suspect received minor injuries and was taken to local hospital to be treated.

One other police officer received minor injuries from a dog bite during the search for the suspect.

No other members of the community were injured during this incident.
