Chandler police have taken a man into custody after a deadly random shooting on Monday afternoon.

According to the Chandler Police Department, on April 3, at approximately 4:47 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 2200 block of East Hazeltine Way. A female victim called 911 to report her husband had been shot by a man when they stopped to check their mailbox near Cooper Road and Hunt Highway.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 58-year-old man deceased, with numerous gunshot wounds. He was in his vehicle with his wife and stopped to check their mail when they were confronted by 31-year-old Channing Vanderbilt, who opened fire on them.
The wife was not injured. She was able to call 911 and identify Vanderbilt as the shooter, who was still at the scene and behaving as a bystander.

Earlier in the day, officers responded to a nearby area after a citizen reported someone had shot at his cinder block wall near the 2400 block of roof Gleneagle Drive. There were no witnesses to this crime and initially no evidence was found.

Chandler officers are investigating whether the crimes were related.

Vanderbilt was booked into jail and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and other lesser charges.
