Man Dies In Head-On Phoenix Collision

Phoenix police detectives are investigating a collision that occurred Monday morning that left a man dead.

According to Sergeant Melissa Soliz of the Phoenix Police Department, on June 5, 2023 just after 4:30 a.m., officers responded to a call of a collision involving two vehicles near 16th Street and Elwood Street. Early information indicates a car going south on 16th Street crossed over into the northbound lanes and collided head on with a pickup truck. The driver of the car suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital where he later died. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Goliath Cortez.

Any impairment will be determined in his postmortem examination, according to Sergeant Soliz.

The driver and passenger of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries. The driver remained on scene. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.
