
On Thursday, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a man was shot and killed during an altercation with a Navajo Police Department officer in Kaibeto.
According to the Navajo Police Department (NPD), it was reported to the NPD that a person was intoxicated and causing a disturbance at a residence. The person was refusing to leave. Officers arrived and could not initially locate the man. When the officers left, another call was made stating the same man was on the porch attempting to force his way back into the residence.
An officer contacted the man, who reportedly became combative. During this encounter, the officer deployed their taser. However, the man was not affected and physically attacked the officer. A call was made to dispatch stating the man was fighting with the officer.
During the fight, the man forcefully took the taser from the officer and attempted to use the taser on the officer. The officer was able to draw their firearm and shot the man. After stopping the man’s actions, the officer began rendering aid as medics were notified and other officers arrived on scene.
The man succumbed to his injuries soon thereafter.
This incident has been referred to the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.
