A man was fatally injured after his car hit a large metal power pole while driving along the I-17 Access Road near Union Hills Drive.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, on August 24, 2023, at about 6:50 p.m. officers responded to a collision near Interstate 17 and Union Hills Drive. When officers got to the scene, they found a man, identified as 40-year-old Shawn Smith, suffering from critical injuries. Phoenix Fire responded and took him to a hospital where he did not survive his injuries.
Detectives took over the investigation and learned that Smith was going north on the access road when he hit the curb lost control and struck a large power pole.
