On Thursday, September 7, Arizona Representative Matt Gress (Legislative District 4) announced that he will be holding a hearing regarding the issue of housing homeless people in Maricopa County. It will be a community hearing of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Budgetary Funding Formulas, which Gress chairs.

The hearing will be held as follows:

Scottsdale Civic Center Library
3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85251
Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

The witnesses that will be testifying include the following:

  • David Ortega, Mayor, City of Scottsdale, Arizona
  • Jared Meyer Senior Advisor at the Cicero Institute
  • Erica Sandberg Journalist/Author
  • Lisa Chastain CEO, Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson
  • An invitation to testify has been extended to the Arizona Department of Housing.

A very important part of the announcement is that the public will be allowed and encouraged to participate, “A portion of the hearing will be exclusively reserved for public comment, which Chairman Gress views as being an important missing component in this matter so far.”

The problem of homelessness in general, and homeless housing in particular, are nothing new, neither is Rep. Gress’ effort to find a solution. Those wishing to read background material on this subject may do so by going here and here.
