Prayers are being offered up for two Border Patrol agents injured in a collision caused by a reckless driver on Interstate 8 between Wellton and Yuma.

Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls tweeted, “Please join me in prayer tonight for our 2 Border Patrol agents from the I-8 Telegraph Pass checkpoint incident. May God heal them to full recovery.”

The Border Patrol Union also called for prayers.

“Asking for your thoughts and prayers on behalf of two agents in critical condition after an event at a checkpoint on Interstate 8 between Wellton and Yuma, Arizona yesterday evening,” tweeted the group that represents Border Patrol agents. “We have a lot of brave agents who risk their lives every day trying to protect this nation.”

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating what happened at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday evening.

According to sources, a 66-year-old male driver with 3 passengers sped through the I-8 Telegraph pass check point. The incident led to multiple injuries, including the two Border Patrol agents.

In March, the Arizona Daily Independent reported another U.S. Border Patrol agent continues to recover from horrific injuries he sustained in December after being struck by an impaired motorcyclist while on duty at the State Route 80 checkpoint in Tombstone in December 2022.

The Arizona Daily Independent confirmed the agent suffered multiple fractures to his face, including his eye sockets. He also experienced a brain injury caused by damage to his carotid artery which supplies blood to the brain, face, and neck.

The motorcyclist was identified in court documents as Derek M. Roberts of Benson. He too was flown to Banner UMC for injuries sustained when he drove his motorcycle into the Tombstone checkpoint at a speed close to 60 mph.
