Man Killed After Pulling Gun On Phoenix Police Officers

Phoenix police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Monday evening near 60th Lane and McDowell Road that left a man, Miguel Godines, dead after he pulled a gun on officers.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, just before 10:45 p.m. officers spotted a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in the area of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the vehicle continued. The Air Unit followed the vehicle overhead as patrol vehicles pulled back. As the Air Unit was following, the vehicle stops, and the 37-year-old Godines gets out and tries to take another vehicle at gunpoint but the vehicle drives off. He gets back into the suspect vehicle and drives off.

The suspect vehicle drove to the area of 60th Lane and McDowell Road where the car stopped, and Godines gets out again and runs towards other vehicles stopped on the street, in an attempt to take a vehicle. Officers moved in as Godines ran towards another car that stopped on McDowell Road with a gun in hand. This was when the officer involved shooting occurred.

After the shooting, officers were able to get the firearm away from Godines and provided medical aid until the fire department took over. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation remains active.
