A bill, sponsored by Senator T.J. Shope, that would legalize the controlled use of psilocybin mushrooms as a treatment option for certain mental health conditions passed out of the Senate on Thursday on a bipartisan support.

Shope’s bill, SB 1570, would require the Department of Health Services (DHS) to begin the licensing of psychedelic-assisted therapy centers and prescribes licensure requirements and restrictions.

“The controlled use of ‘magic mushrooms’ has proven to be a safe and effective treatment for people suffering from issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD,” said Shope. “I’ve heard numerous testimonies regarding the success of this alternative therapy, especially within our Veteran and first responder communities, where this drug ultimately saved lives and allowed these individuals to properly function in society after enduring horrific PTSD. It’s our duty to support those who put their lives on the line to serve our communities and our country. If this treatment will help our heroes who are struggling with their mental health because of their service, then it should absolutely be offered as an option. I believe we are on the verge of something remarkable for Veterans, first responders, and other’s struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues.”

The bill now heads to the House for consideration.

  1. Of all the current issues that are affecting the lives of the people of Arizona why is TJ Shope focused on psilocybin mushrooms? He was elected to office to represent all the people not the marijuana industry lobbyist looking to expand their product line to increase profits under the guise of mental health. This is a disgusting and so is Shope for prioritizing lobbyist over improving the quality of mental health care for all instead of aiding parasites.
