Phoenix Police Department detectives are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred during rush-hour traffic near 29th Street and Southern Avenue.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, just after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 2900 East Southern Avenue for an injury collision involving two vehicles. When officers arrived, they located Jimmy Aviles with serious injuries. He was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

The adult male driver in the second car was also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives believe that the driver of one of the vehicles, identified the 46-year-old Aviles, was traveling westbound on Southern Avenue when he failed to control his speed and crossed over into the oncoming traffic, striking the second vehicle.

Investigators suspect impairment was a factor, however specifics of this investigation will not be known until the accident reconstruction and lab analysis are complete.
