A man is dead and another is recovering in the hospital after collision involving two vehicles during an early morning commute on Monday.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers were called to a vehicle collision just after 5:30 a.m. at 40th Street and Cactus Road. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle on its roof and another with serious damage. The fire department responded and provided aid to the drivers of both vehicles. One of the drivers, 70-year-old Michael Peczynski, suffered serious injuries and died on scene. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later stabilized at the hospital.

Detectives believe Peczynski was driving a silver SUV when he failed to stop for the red light at the intersection while heading westbound on Cactus Road. The SUV then collided with a black, 4-door passenger car that was heading southbound on 40th Street.
