Carbone Bills Aimed At Easing Housing Crisis Pass With Bipartisan Support

On Wednesday, the Arizona House of Representatives passed two much needed bills, HB 2720 and HB 2721, aimed at increasing the supply of housing in the state of Arizona..

The bills, sponsored by State Representative Michael Carbone, passed the Arizona Legislature with strong bipartisan support, and will be transmitted to Governor Hobbs for her signature.

According to the Arizona Department of Housing, 270,000 homes must be built to meet the state’s growing need. Since 2020, the median sale price in Arizona has doubled, with the average home selling for $430,000.

These two bills will increase the supply of housing types that are currently illegal to build in most cities and towns across the state. HB 2720 will legalize backyard Accessory Dwelling Units, or Casitas, and HB 2721 will legalize duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes—or Middle Housing— in certain areas of cities and towns. Both bills will only apply to cities and towns with a population of more than 75,000 people.

“Arizonans across the state are being decimated by high housing costs and unrelenting inflation,” said Representative Carbone. “Right now, our teachers, nurses, firefighters, and police officers can’t afford to live in the communities that they serve. Our children and grandchildren can’t afford to live in the communities that they grew up in. Most Arizonans have been priced out of the housing economy – it’s wrong and un-American.”

Carbone noted that State Senator Anna Hernandez (D-24) provided key leadership on these two bills.

“I cannot go a single day without hearing from my constituents about the high housing costs in our state that is decimating my community and locking families in poverty,” said Senator Hernandez. “We worked tirelessly with housing and community stakeholders in order to craft this historic and bipartisan solution that we are proud to send to the Governor.”

“This was truly a bipartisan effort, and I am grateful for Senator Hernandez’s leadership on this issue,” Representative Carbone added.

Which areas would benefit from multiple occupancy dwellings? It’s criminal how the Biden admin printed fake monies and drove up the price of single family dwellings in the first place! Bring down the cost & get families into their own single family home for ownership! The elites don’t want Americans to have their own piece of the pie! They want us forever crowded in and indebted to the pigs at the top!
