
A suspect has died and a Phoenix Police Department officer was injured in a shootout on Tuesday morning.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, the shooting occurred in the area of 10th Street and Southern Avenue shortly after 3 a.m.
On May 28, 2024, at approximately 2:56 a.m., two Phoenix Police Department officers patrolling in the area of 10th Street and
Southern Avenue stopped a man on a bike for a traffic violation. The officer riding in the passenger seat got out to contact the man. The man immediately became combative. A fight broke out and the officer driving the patrol Tahoe came around his vehicle to help the first officer detain the suspect.
During the struggle the man pulled out a handgun and fired it, striking one of the officers in the leg.
The other officer returned fire hitting the man. The man, now disarmed, ran a short distance on Southern Avenue and was taken into custody by arriving officers.
Officers provided first aid to the injured officer, who was transported by Phoenix Fire to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. Officers also provided medical aid to the suspect, who was transported to a hospital by Phoenix Fire. The suspect later died as a result of his injuries.
“This is indicative of the violence officers face every day protecting our community,” said Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan.
This is the ninth officer involved shooting of 2024.
There have been eight incidents where officers have been directly fired on. Three of those have resulted in officers being shot in the line of duty.
