Phoenix Police Investigating Death Of 10-Year-Old Hiker In South Mountain Park

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating the death of a 10-yar-old hiker who was airlifted from South Mountain Park and Preserve.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, just before 3:00 p.m., on July 2, 2024, officers were called to the South Mountain Park and Preserve for an injured hiker. Police helicopter pilots assisted the fire department with an active mountain rescue and airlifted the child from the mountain to an awaiting ambulance. The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died as a result of a heat related medical event.

Detectives learned that the child victim was hiking at South Mountain with family when he began to experience heat related emergencies.
