Suspect Claims Self-Defense In Deadly Shooting In Phoenix Alleyway

Phoenix Police Department detectives continue to process evidence collected after a nighttime shooting that left a man dead this week.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on January 21st, 2025, around 10:00 pm, officers were called to a shooting behind a home near 20th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground in an alley and suffering from a gunshot wound. The fire department responded and took the man to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. Two men came from one of the homes and told officers they were involved in the shooting. Both men were detained.

During the investigation, one of the men admitted to shooting the victim after fearing for the safety of his relative, when the victim threw a rock at him. Detectives spoke to the relative, who also provided a similar statement.

Both men were released, pending the outcome of the case. A charging decision will be made at the conclusion of the investigation.
