Early results show that Tucson’s Proposition 414 is failing about 30% to 70%. That proposition would have increased Tucson’s rate by 0.50, bringing the total rate to 9.20% from the current 8.70%.

Tucson voters have a history of approving sales tax increases whose proponents claim the funds raised will go mostly to public safety.

In 2017, they approved Prop 101, which provided for a “temporary” five-year 0.50% sales tax increase.

In 2022, they approved Prop 411, which extended the 2017 increase for another “temporary” 10 years.

This year, the voters were asked to approve an additional 0.50% ten-year, “temporary” increase, but overwhelmingly refused to approve it.

Some proponents of Prop 414 are blaming lack of police support and Trump’s economic uncertainty for its failure. However, it could be that voters are tired of approving tax increases that fail to fix the problems that proponents claimed they would fix.

Opponents point out that the city could have fixed these problems if it had not spent the extra money they received on the advancement of socialist agendas.

When evaluating the voters’ decision on how to vote, it helps to keep this issue in perspective by looking at some numbers:

CURRENT SALES TAX RATES FOR 4 MAJOR CITIES:

CITY STATE TAX COUNTY TAX CITY TAX TOTAL TAX
PHOENIX 5.60 0.70 2.30 8.60
TUCSON 5.60 0.50 2.60 8.70
FLAGSTAFF 5.60 1.30 2.28 9.18
SCOTTSDALE 5.60 0.70 1.75 8.05

Among the major cities in this sample, Tucson has the second highest total rate of sales taxation at 8.70%. Had the proposed increase been approved, Tucson would have advanced to having the highest overall rate at 9.20%.

However, if we look at the city tax rates alone, Tucson already has the highest rate at 2.60%. Had Prop 414 been approved, that rate would have jumped to 3.10%, which would have been a 19.23% increase.

It could be these numbers, along with the failure of previous tax increases to fix problems, that caused Tucson voters to reject Prop 414.

  1. Arizona state govt. needs to simply stop funding Tucson as much as possible. Build bypasses around its Metro on the East side and on existing right-of-ways NOT in Pima County. Defund at least 33% of UA that is pure morbid obesity in a looney tune menagerie of useless curricula, employing a small army of similar looney left wing academics. They have done nothing for the poor people of Tucson for 50+ years, certainly nothing for hapless, highly indebted ($$$) students with useless degrees, and their equally gullible tax paying parents, who trusted UA. STOP FUNDING TUCSON, ARIZONA.

  2. Why should cutting waste, fraud and abuse mean cutting services? Only Democrats know the answer.

  3. Every budget needs to come w/ quarterly or annual audit requirements and criminal misuse qualifications, then prosecute, baby, prosecute.

  4. Tucson needs to unclog the drain and flush the Political class ruining things down there. Imagine if it wasn’t run by criminal communist. It’s a beautiful place with lots of opportunities but for the politicritters destroying it.

  5. broken promises – taxes collected – promised projects NOT DONE FOR YEARS – How about a new government in TUCSON – How about TPD being CLOSED DOWN – Let the PCS office take over 100% as one ‘money saving measure’ TPD is an absolute cluster copulation of bureaucracy

  6. Don’t be surprised that just before the election is certified, all of a sudden more mail in ballots magically appear to change the outcome.

  7. We don’t need any tax increases. We need an Arizona DOGE. They’ll find plenty of money to fund the difference.

  8. Love the picture of a bewildered and dumb as a box of rocks Regina. Here’s a plan, learn to live within your already bloated budget and quit funding all your feel good junk.

So, f you and the effing horse you and the Council rode in on!

    • how dare you insult a box of rocks! Why she is the face of a younger grijalva hoping to move up without BEING voted IN TO A POSITION JUST AS HE WAS! They haqve decimated not only tucson but pima country a place reportedly the 5th poorest in the country and they are damned proud of it. AS POSTED ABOVE THEY NEED TO BE VOTED OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE since the chance of a recall is not possible.

      • If you defund NPR then maybe more moderate news can be reported rather than left slanted commentary. Keep pressing those in Congress for this change. If you travel into Northern Arizona the only stations you hear are NPR stations. Until they get more moderate stations then changing the face of some of these Counties will take a long time in influence. Until then NPR spews its views to the outlining Counties.
