Apache Junction Police Officer Shot By Fleeing Suspect

An Apache Junction Police officer was hospitalized, suffering from injuries sustained in a shooting on Monday morning.

The officer, a 3-year veteran of the Apache Junction Police Department, sustained life-threatening injuries.

According to the Apache Junction Police Department, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a call was received reporting a vehicle with a driver brandishing a firearm near Ironwood Road and Ray Avenue.

An Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD) officer made contact with a vehicle matching the description on Ironwood Road north of Radiance Avenue. After making contact with the driver, the subject stepped out of the vehicle with the gun in his hand. Officers followed the 37-year-old male subject southbound on Ironwood Road, where he continued with the firearm in his hand. AJPD officers attempted to gain compliance from the male by use of verbal commands and less-lethal means, once they were in the area of Radiance Dr. and Davis Dr. The male shot at police officers, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire.

The subject was also struck by gunfire, resulting in injuries, and was transported to the hospital, where he is being treated.
