Senator Gallego’s Villainization of the Right Comes Home to Roost

Senator Ruben Gallego is calling for an end to political violence following the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk — leaders on the right are saying it’s too little, too late.

The independent X.com fan page for Kari Lake, the U.S. Agency for Global Media acting chief executive officer, said Gallego bore responsibility for inciting violence with his speech, citing Gallego’s past accusations of fascism.

“Ruben is a vicious partisan. It’s an absolute joke he now claims to be a ‘unifier,’” posted the war room account.

Gallego attempted to separate Kirk from the political implications of his death. The senator called for an end to political violence from both parties.

“Beyond politics Charlie Kirk was someone’s father, husband and son. Remember that first, before engaging in whataboutism,” said Gallego. “His family will never be the same. Political violence has to stop by all sides.”

Although Gallego’s statement indicated political violence on the right was also a major problem, the vast majority of political violence in recent decades has come from leftist individuals and groups.

Ammunition found alongside the gun at the site of Kirk’s shooting contained messages indicating support of leftist ideology, namely modern anti-fascism.

“Hey fascist! CATCH!” read one unfired casing, with four arrows believed to represent the bomb-releasing command used in a certain video game, “Helldivers.”

Another unfired casing contained lyrics from an Anti-Fascist Italian song released following World War II. The song is sung during the annual Liberation Day in Italy celebrating the fall of Benito Mussolini’s regime.

A leak of the probable cause statement for the arrest of the man accused of Kirk’s assassination, 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson, indicated that he disliked Kirk’s political beliefs.

“Fascism” as espoused by members of the Democratic Party and those on the modern left conflict with the official and historical meaning of the term.

By official definition, “fascism” is populist politics exalting nation above the individual. Fascist governments are centralized and autocratic; its leaders are dictatorial. Fascist governance relies on severe economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression of opposition.

Two of the most prominent historical examples of fascism are Germany under Adolf Hilter, and Italy under Benito Mussolini. More currently, Russia and China have come to be recognized as contenders for modern fascist countries.

The current American government and its leaders, as well as those accused right-wing leaders in and around the Republican Party, do not qualify as fascist per the strict definition of the term.

The day before Kirk’s death, Gallego accused Republicans of wanting people to be sick and impoverished.

“Destroying Medicaid wasn’t enough for them. They want more people to become sicker and poorer,” said Gallego.

Gallego has also spread misinformation about Kirk.

In 2022, Gallego falsely accused Kirk of celebrating the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband.

“Charlie Kirk[,] who only a few days ago celebrated the assault on Paul Pelosi,” said Gallego.

Kirk called the attack “awful” during an Halloween-day episode of his “Charlie Kirk Show” in 2022. Kirk did question the duplicity of the California justice system: why other criminals usually were released or out on bail while Pelosi’s attacker was held without bail. His remarks calling for Pelosi’s attacker to be released on bail were widely seen as sarcasm in the context of his criticism of the justice system in major cities.

“I’m not qualifying it. I think it’s awful. It’s not right,” said Kirk of the attack.
